This was the challenge:
To write a fugue on this theme:

Click on the theme to hear it in midi!
The idea was to let as many people as possible write a fugue on this theme in any way they like! In this way we wanted to establish a tribute to J.S. Bach and his marvellous "Die Kunst der Fuge".

The Rules for participating were:
1. These six notes MUST comprise the first six notes of your fugue. You may alter rhythm, durations, add rests, use different metres, add extra notes at the end of this theme etc.
2. The fugue must at least have 2 voices.
3. Your choice of instrumentation is free. It would be nice however if it is also playable by real instruments.
4. The length of the resulting fugue is free.
5. Send your fugue to us by email attachment in midi-1 format (see bottom of this page for our addresses) before june 1st 2000.
6. All fugues will be published within 7 days after receiving them by e-mail right here on this page in midi format including the name and country of the composer. There will be an optional possibility to publicize your e-mail address too and a URL to your site, if you have one.
7. Voting on your fugues: The purpose of this rule is to organize a most democratic way of letting all participating composers judge on the results, instead of limiting the voting to a select jury. So you all are judging on your own works! All participants will be asked by email to vote between the 2-nd and 30-th of june 2000. You must divide 6 points on 3 fugues made by other participants: you must give 3 points to the best fugue, 2 points to the second best fugue and 1 point to the third best fugue. We will keep your e-mail address to check on genuinity and in order to prevent double votings. You may vote on your own fugue too. The results of the votings will be displayed from july 1st 2000 on this page.
8. Each participant may only send one fugue.
9. Each participant agrees with copyright-free publication of his fugue. We do not take responsibility for the contents of the works or copyright issues. Neither will we pay any copyrights to participants.
10. All fugues also will be published in midi-format on a CD-R which will be obtainable after the 31-st of july 2000. This CD can be ordered from this site by e-mail for $7,- excl. p&p/VAT/handling&shipping. This contest is a non-commercial event; we just need to cover our expenses.
11. The prize participants can win in this contest is - besides (of course!) eternal fame - a free copy of this CD! We will provide 10 CD's for those participants who received the highest votes.
12. Participants agree with all these 12 rules
